Return shipment of vitrified residues from France to Switzerland

Beznau nuclear power plant in Switzerland

During the course of 2000, Swiss nuclear power plants generated approximately 25 billion kwh, in other words almost 40% of the country's overall electricity generation.

These plants use nuclear fuel which, once spent, can be managed using one of the two following strategies:

  • Direct disposal, in its current state, of the used fuel.
  • Reprocessing-recycling.

With sustainable development in mind, Switzerland opted for reprocessing-recycling.
