The production of large forged parts - The sustainable development commitments
Creusot Forge and Creusot Mécanique participate actively in AREVA’s Sustainable Development initiative. Both entities have been working steadfastly for several years to ensure safety and protect the environment.
Integrated Management System: Quality-Health-Safety-Environment (QSHE)
OHSAS 18001: ensure staff safety in the workplace. Moreover, production of these two sites generates no radioactive release into the atmosphere.
Environmental Protection
Risk management and prevention
Creusot Forge and Creusot Mécanique maintain the highest level of safety to preserve the health of our employees and the public and to protect the environment.
Minimizing the use of resources
Water consumption at Creusot Forge and Creusot Mécanique increased by 2% and 3.2% respectively in 2008 compared with 2007.
Creusot Forge installed a closed circuit cooling system in 2008/2009. This system now reduces the use of industrial water by more than 75%.
Electric power use increased by 14% at Creusot Forge in 2008 compared with 2007, mainly due to increased activity at both sites. Electric power use decreased by 2.8% at Creusot Mécanique.
Fossil energy use dropped at Creusot Mécanique (-7.8%) and increased slightly at Creusot Forge (+2.2%).
Waste management
Like all industrial sites, Creusot Forge and Creusot Mécanique generate conventional industrial waste.
Common industrial waste (CIW) packaging and disposal reflect the nature and the origin of the waste.
Hazardous industrial waste (HIW) is collected by certified waste management companies and treated in licensed facilities.
Almost 65% of all HIW and 81% of all CIW was reused in 2008 (recycling, energy production, regeneration)
In 2008 also, Creusot Forge and Creusot Mécanique implemented a waste management improvement plan to optimize waste sorting operations and the waste storage areas.
Health and safety
AREVA’s Sustainable Development initiative includes health and safety objectives, which are incorporated in programs implemented by the Creusot Forge and Creusot Mécanique unit.
As in all AREVA group entities, the health and safety of employees and subcontractor personnel working at the sites are an absolute priority for Creusot Forge and Creusot Mécanique.
Health
Creusot Forge and Creusot Mécanique rely on the Saône et Loire occupational health administration for occupational health services. This administration monitors the health of all employees in the entity. It confirms that employees are able to work, provides emergency care, offers advice regarding occupational health and working conditions, and participates in prevention initiatives.
Occupational safety
Occupational safety, including prevention and protection, is a permanent commitment for all. Creusot Forge and Creusot mécanique had accident frequency rates of 3.16 and 10.4 respectively in 2008, while the accident severity rate was 0.26 at Creusot Forge and 0.06 at Creusot Mécanique. Several initiatives are ongoing to improve this performance and reach the objective of zero accident:
safety inspections;
- initiatives undertaken by the Health and Occupational Safety Committee (CHSCT);
- taking ergonomics into account for the design of tools;
- analysis of accidents that have occurred;
- information meetings dedicated to safety.
Skills development and human resources
Creusot Forge and Creusot Mécanique implemented an aggressive recruitment policy in 2008. Sixty new employees were hired during the year, for 25% growth in the total number of employees.
Today, human resources challenges include the integration of new employees, professional training and the transfer of knowledge to a new generation.
Promoting equal opportunity
The AREVA group has signed an agreement on equal opportunity. On this background, Creusot Forge and Creusot Mécanique are committed to promoting the employment of persons with disabilities and equality between men and women.
Professional training, interns and apprentices
Creusot Forge and Creusot Mécanique offer training to develop the skills of their employees.
Momentous training programs were implemented in 2008, particularly in the areas of certification, technical expertise and management. Training at Creusot Forge and Creusot Mécanique came to more than 5,000 hours in 2008. It is expected to be more than 6,700 hours in 2009.
In addition to training their employees, our sites receive apprentices and interns every year. These individuals are able to complement their academic knowledge with hands-on experience acquired in various departments throughout the company.
