AREVA, a strategic partner for Namibia

The inauguration of a desalination plant in Wlotzkasbaken, Namibia, in preparation for the start of operations of the Trekkopje uranium mine is a component of AREVA’s strategy to raise production capacity. With this project, the group aims to respond to the sharp upturn in global demand for uranium and to offset the gradual depletion of secondary resources. It also confirms its role as a strategic partner to Namibia to develop its uranium resources sustainably.
Mining operations with low environmental impacts
The Trekkoppje mine, one of AREVA’s flagship projects, will be the largest open pit mine in Southern Africa. The group developed a special mining technique for the project: heap leaching.
Fresh water for mining, industry and the community
The fresh water produced by the desalination plant will be channeled to the mine by aqueduct. Surplus production will be redistributed to the community and local industries.
Desalination, a responsible choice
The desalination plant built by AREVA will preserve the water table. This is vital in view of the Trekkoppje mine’s water requirements.
