Bioenergy: profit from organic waste

AREVA is one of the ground-breaking industrial groups in the development of bioenergy technology. Its activity covers the design and turnkey construction of cogeneration plants using biomass. The group is the world leader in this sector which has a high development potential, particularly in local markets.
Clean energy, a factor of rural development
A biomass power plant produces energy from natural animal and vegetable waste (rice husks, sawdust, straw, bagasse from the cultivation of sugar cane, etc). Its advantages are numerous:
- It brings to light fresh ways to profit from organic matter which would otherwise be unused.
- It is CO2 neutral and avoids methane being produced during the decomposition of organic matter.
- As the waste is collected within a radius of approximately 50 km, local projects for the production of energy from biomass create a lot of jobs, directly and indirectly, in rural areas.
- The biomass power plants can use several types of fuel to continue their operation outside the collection periods. They can be connected to the local power grid or to an industrial facility to which they supply electricity and heat.
Bioenergy is the second largest source of renewable energy in the world and the largest in Europe (65% of the renewable energy in 2005 - Source: Eurostat).
Approximately one hundred turnkey bioenergy plants
AREVA's bioenergy activity consists of providing its clients with turnkey solutions for the production of energy without CO2.
The group is the world leader in this field. It offers a comprehensive range of services ranging from advice to implementation, via engineering, procurement, construction, implementation and project financing solutions.
AREVA is one of the rare industrial operators to support its clients in obtaining carbon credits.
AREVA has more than 100 bioenergy power plants in operation or under construction in Europe, Latin America and Asia.
These facilities:
- Total installed electrical power of approximately 2900 MW;
- Contribute to avoiding more than the equivalent of 3 million tonnes of CO2 per year.
