Hydrogen: adapting to the demand for energy

Due to their intrinsic qualities of efficiency, storage capacity and respect for the environment, hydrogen and fuel cells are among the best solutions for managing energy according to the demand. By storing hydrogen and drawing on it, it is possible to provide clean energy irrespective of the energy source instantaneous production rate.
Hydrogen today: clean production
Although hydrogen is extremely plentiful on earth, pure hydrogen is virtually non-existent, so, it must be produced before it can be used.
For decades, hydrogen has been produced industrially using chemical processes which emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
AREVA is revolutionizing this industry by developing clean hydrogen production. The solutions proposed by the group in fact use water electrolysis, powered by CO2-free electricity. So, they do not generate greenhouse gases.
Hydrogen energy activities brochure
AREVA develops hydrogen technologies and markets. This activity covers 2 fields: electricity production via fuel cells, as well as energy management and storage via hydrogen production by water electrolysis.
Combining hydrogen - fuel cells
Hydrogen can be stored to produce electricity anywhere at any time, with high performance and without necessarily being connected to a power grid. By coupling the production of hydrogen and its storage to a fuel cell, it is, in fact, possible to design independent energy management systems.
Used alone or in hybrid systems, fuel cells guarantee the power supply continuity in the medium and long terms, even in severe environments.
This technology provides responses to specific needs, such as stationary applications for power supply:
- Backup systems, for more details, please consult the data sheet Mistral (pdf 2 Mo)
- Hybrid systems combining hydrogen with other renewable energy sources: the hydrogen produced is stored and then redistributed during peaks in consumption.
MYRTE platform
AREVA track record: Distributed energy storage solution on MYRTE platform, University of Corsica site in Ajaccio, France. The world largest hydrogen-based energy management system coupled to a photovoltaic field.
AREVA at the heart of hydrogen field development programs
AREVA is involved, with different industrial companies and national research organizations of the hydrogen field, in the following programs:
- "Hydrogen and Fuel Cells" of the Agence Nationale pour la Recherche (National Research Agency): this ambitious program aims at promoting fuel cell and hydrogen technologies, as well as their applications in the motor industry.
- Horizon Hydrogen Power (H2E): this program focuses on the experimental development and industrial deployment of fuel cell technology. It brings together French industrial groups, SMEs and research laboratories.
