Technical Center: serving operators through innovation

Benefiting from a unique set of competences, the Technical Center is involved in the design, construction and maintenance of nuclear power plants. They also work on developing techniques aimed at improving the operation of power plants. The Technical center focuses on the AREVA business groups and the Client's needs.
Its 550 highly qualified and experienced scientists, engineers and technicians support the scope of activities AREVA by developing new technologies and provides expert advices, technical support, operational aids, on-site assistance.
The Technical Center missions
EPR loop in full scale model
AREVA's Technical Center incorporates the appropriate laboratories and production installations, recognized among the best in the world, to carry out their activities. These services are constantly kept up-to-date and offer state-of-the-art science and technology.
It is spread across 5 sites, in Germany, at Erlangen and Karlstein and in France, at Chalon/Saint-Marcel, Le Creusot and Montpellier.
The Technical Center main missions:
- Maintain and develop Reactors and Services Business group’s test and laboratory facilities and key technologies, and bring them to market,
- Operate on an economic and competitive basis laboratories and large scale test facilities,
- Develop and manufacture key products and manage their product life-cycle,
- Foster innovation, define and manage the R&D necessary for long term sustainability of the laboratory activities and key technologies.
Proven expertise
The Technical Center is organized along five worldwide Technology Lines (competence centers):
The Chemistry/Radiochemistry Technology Line
It is located in Erlangen and Le Creusot and has a correspondent in Lynchburg. It operates analytical chemistry land radiochemistry laboratories as well as hot cell facilities. Together with the University of Montpellier, it works on innovative technologies like membranes for energy. The Thermal Hydraulics & Components Testing Technology Line< The Manufacturing Activities Technology Line
It is located in Erlangen and Karlstein with a correspondent in Lynchburg. It develops and manufactures specific mechanical components (e.g. neutron flux instrumentation) as well as most advanced electronic control systems (e. g. refueling machines, robotics). This Technology Line is also in charge of the maintenance and servicing of its products during plant outages. The Materials, Corrosion, Welding Technology Line
It operates laboratories for material investigations in nano, micro, and macro scale at Erlangen and Le Creusot sites. The corrosion labs are equipped with loops and autoclaves to investigate material’s behaviour under BWR and PWR environmental conditions. These labs are the basis to perform root cause analysis on request of our customers. The welding laboratory in Chalon/St-Marcel develops all kind of welding technologies and provides Equipment BU and Installed Base BU with support for welding applications. For ITER first wall components (panels and shielding), it develops most advanced manufacturing methods. The Monitoring & Diagnostic Systems Technology Line
It is located in Erlangen and Karlstein with correspondents in Le Creusot and Lynchburg supplies Installed Base and New Builds business units with all kinds of most advanced monitoring and diagnosis products and solutions. It also operates test facilities for calibration and shaking tables to simulate earthquake loads to full components or equipment racks.
Prospective customers with business in other technologies are invited to take full advantage of the Technical Center’s accumulated knowledge and expertise. In this regard, our proposed solutions offer customers the economic and technical consistency they need.
