AREVA Resources Australia: searching for uranium
AREVA Holdings Australia Pty Ltd operates uranium exploration activities through its wholly-owned subsidiary, AREVA Resources Australia Pty Ltd (ARA).
Abundant uranium - Opportunities for exportation
- Australia produced 5,400 tons of uranium oxide in 2015. It is the world’s number three uranium producer behind Kazakhstan and Canada. Production and exportation cover an average of 5-10,000 metric tons of uranium oxide each year. Australia also has the largest low-cost uranium resources in the Reasonably Assured Resources category, with almost 30% of the world’s resources in this category.
- Australia has, however, made the political decision to act in the nuclear domain through operating mines and exporting the extracted uranium and through the work of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) with its research reactor located at Lucas Heights, NSW. Public debate on the nuclear cycle is however being actively called for in both State and Federal Governments. In 2015, the South Australian Government launched a Royal Commission into the Nuclear Fuel Cycle. It will report its findings on the 6th of May 2016.
Greenfields uranium exploration
Since 2006 AREVA Resources Australia has been undertaking grassroots exploration for uranium across South Australia, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland. The company is presently focused on the generation of new projects and is conducting in-depth studies of the data and experience acquired during its exploration in Australia for the past 40 years.
