AREVA NC Niger: new mining projects

SOMAIR open pit mine in Niger

AREVA has been present in Niger—a country with considerable uranium resources—for more than 40 years. Today, AREVA NC Niger represents the group before the authorities and undertakes exploration and integration activities in regions across the country.

Managing relations and ensuring the group’s future in Niger

AREVA NC Niger, founded in 2006, succeeded COGEMA Niger. It is a 100% subsidiary of AREVA and manages the group's relations with Nigerien authorities. AREVA NC Niger simultaneously conducts exploration campaigns and leads new mining projects and manages communication and social solidarity initiatives in favor of local communities. Its headquarters are located in Niamey.

A major uraniferous province

Since 2001, AREVA teams have relaunched their prospection campaigns to discover new uranium resources on the eastern border of Aïr.

Research initially focused on the concessions of the group’s subsidiaries and was then extended to larger areas in the Arlit region.

AREVA and Niger a Sustainable Partnership

AREVA NC Niger dedicated a team of geologists to the search for new uraniferous resources. They were based in Akokan, a mining village located several kilometers from the COMINAK sites.

In 2003, a large-scale aerial geophysical prospection campaign—the first in the country’s history—confirmed northern Niger as a major uraniferous province. One year later, requests for new targeted research permits were submitted to the Nigerien government.

In February 2006, AREVA NC Niger was granted 3 research permits in the Imouraren zone (Imouraren, Afouday and Agebout).

In May 2007, 4 additional permits were granted (Tagait 1, 2, 3 and Zeline 3).).
