Le Bourneix: a depleted gold mining site

The Bourneix mining complex was located in the town of Chalard in the Haute Vienne department of France. It mined the region's gold deposits, in underground and open-pit mines. It is now closed. The ore was processed and concentrated on site.

A historical site

Gold mining is a very old activity in southern Limousin, practiced as early as the era of Roman rule in France.

The Bourneix mining complex was opened in 1982 and saw considerable development following the acquisition of Société des Mines du Bourneix (SMB) by AREVA in 1988. Its annual production then went from 500 kilograms to 2 metric tons of gold.

In 2002, with the depletion of the site's economically recoverable reserves, gold production was ceased.

Environmental monitoring of the reclaimed site is now handled by CESAAM (Centre d'Etudes et de Suivi des Anciennes Activités Minières France et Etranger), based in Bessines.

The Bourneix site is no longer equipped to receive visits.
