Jordan AREVA Resources: uraniferous exploration

Jordan AREVA Resources is a joint exploration venture created between AREVA and the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission. This joint venture, a strong symbol of the Franco-Jordanian desire to cooperate in the field of civil nuclear power, is responsible for uraniferous exploration activities in Jordan.
On September 30, 2008, AREVA signed an agreement with the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission for joint exploration of uraniferous resources in the Central Jordan region, 80 kilometers from Amman. This agreement opens the way for a long-term partnership, with a view to developing a Jordanian electronuclear program.
The agreement relates to a licence of 1,469 square kilometers located to the south of Amman.
Confirming identified reserves
The previous work of the Jordanian Natural Resources Authority (1980-2007) enabled the identification of a surface mineralization with a medium content of 250-950 parts-per-million and the estimation of 65,000 metric tons of uranium, spread across 3 zones and 60 square kilometres (Khan Azzabib, Siwaga, Attarah and Wadi Maghar).
The goals of the JFUMC, the 36-month exploration program carried out since January 14, 2009, are:
- to confirm the expected historical reserves,
- to evaluate the sector’s hydrogeological potential,
- to put in place a strict environmental follow-up process, using international methods and standards.
Sustainable development
Respecting AREVA group practices, Jordan AREVA Resources has integrated sustainable development into the first stages of the project:
Respect for the environment:
- Implementing an environmental zero condition
- Building a camp that respects the environment (no generator group, solar heating in the buildings, wastewater treatment system, waste sorting, planting 1,000 trees)
Commitment:
- An exploration budget for Jordan that ranks among the group’s highest to guarantee the project’s durability
- Respect for employees’ well-being and safety
- Jordan AREVA Resources has also committed to supporting preservation and rehabilitation efforts at Jordanian archaeological sites
Openness and transparency:
- Weekly and monthly meetings to presents results to partners
- Submission of monthly reports
- Site visits
