JOUAC: a closed, then reclaimed, site

Aerial view of the redeveloped Mas Grimaud site, Société des mines de Jouac

La Société des Mines de Jouac, a 100% AREVA-owned subsidiary, operated a mining complex in the town of Jouac (Haute Vienne), France, since the 1970s. This site is now closed.

The richest deposit in France in the 1970s

The Jouac mining complex consisted of a uranium mine and a treatment plant for the extracted ore.

The site was first mined by TOTAL Cie Minière, through SMJ (Société des Mines de Jouac), which became a subsidiary of AREVA in 1993. Its deposit had long been regarded as the richest in France, with more than 5 kilograms of uranium per ton of ore. Between 1987 and 2001, it was operated as an underground mine to a depth of around 400 meters. The production rate was approximately 400 metric tons of uranium per year.

Due to a lack of economically recoverable resources, the company ceased production in 2001 and closed the site at the end of 2002 following its reclamation.

Environmental monitoring of the reclaimed site is now handled by CESAAM (Centre d'Etudes et de Suivi des Anciennes Activités Minières France et Etranger), based in Bessines.

The Jouac site is no longer equipped to receive visits.
