Sustainable development

To limit its impact on the environment, waste management and staff safety COMURHEX Malvési has set up a series of best practices for all of its activities.
Reducing environmental impacts
As with any industrial activity, COMURHEX Malvési uses resources, generates waste and discharges materials into the environment. In order to preserve the natural environment, a number of initiatives have been established:
- Water conservation:
- Installation of a closed-loop cooling water circuit for its facilities
- Construction of storm-water tank for the collection of rainwater
- Reducing energy consumption:
- Renovation or installation of electric, natural gas and even biomass boilers (under construction)
- Reducing airborne emissions:
- New facility to limit VOC (volatile organic carbon).
- Treatment of vents for fluidized bed furnaces in the fluorination unit to enable the purification of gaseous discharges from uranium
Reducing and reusing waste
All the waste produced by COMURHEX Malvési (radioactive or otherwise) is subject to sorting and the appropriate special treatment. It is removed using an approved treatment system and for the most part is reused.
Risk prevention and management
A philosophy of prevention, regular drills and ongoing inspections guarantee optimum safety conditions. With this in mind, the site undertakes to:
- guarantee the safety of people and facilities,
- make preparations for immediate response,
- implement safety exercises (fire drill, chemical spill exercise, etc).
The COMURHEX Malvési facility is subject to European Directives SEVESO I and II on the storage of hydrofluoric acid and ammonia.
Controlling radiological impact
Staff safety is principally assured by means of prevention. That means the wearing of safety equipment, inspection of working areas and medical monitoring.
COMURHEX Malvési regularly implements thorough medical monitoring: In 2010 this comprised:
- 607 medical inspections,
- 972 inspections of medical follow-up,
- 748 additional examinations were performed.
Participatory safety inspections are regularly performed in order to identify and eliminate hazardous working conditions.
