Miramas site

Learn about the major milestones that have marked AREVA Miramas’ history over the past 40 years.

  • 2009: in November, start up of soil cleaning operations. The goal is to clean all the site grounds (approximately 100,000 m3 of soil), while minimizing the production of waste. This is the first time the cleaning process will be employed at such a large scale. Around fifty persons are working on the project, which will be completed sometime in 2014.
  • 2007: ministerial order for administrative decommissioning of regulated nuclear facility 134: the building is removed from the list of nationally regulated nuclear facilities and its status is revoked. Prefecture orders authorize reclamation
  • 2003: dismantling begins at the facility for isotopic separation of lithium. The definitive end of operations is declared at the facility for isotopic separation of boron.
  • 2002: the Miramas site celebrates 40 years on April 1. Lithium recycling is launched.
  • 2001: prefectoral order authorizes dismantling of the lithium isotopic separation facility.
  • 2000: end of operations is declared at the lithium isotopic separation facility.
  • 1992: a boron production and isotopic separation unit is installed.
  • 1983: a storage warehouse for stable and solid compounds of enriched and depleted natural uranium is constructed: regulated nuclear facility 134.
  • 1976: COGEMA is founded and entrusted with the Miramas facility. Production of lithium 7 begins in response to demand from builders and operators of PWR nuclear power plants.
  • 1961: the Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique (CEA) establishes a lithium 6 production unit (alkaline metal destined for France’s military program) and creates the Miramas Center in 1962.
