History

COMURHEX Malvési natural uranium to UF4 conversion plant

The COMURHEX Malvési industrial center was created in 1959 on the site of an old sulfur production plant. Since then, the site has undergone continuous modernization, in particular with the reduction of environmental impacts.

  • 2009: Start-up of construction works for the new COMURHEX II facility
  • 2007:
    • Launch of the COMURHEX II project (May)
    • Completion of work to secure the lagoon zone, commissioning of the closed-loop cooling circuit, the osmosis system, network separation, and isolation of the regulation pond
    • Triple certification for the Integrated Management System (IMS): ISO 9001 version 2000, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001
  • 2006: A 29 million euro investment in safety and environmental protection
  • 2004: Commencement of improvement work on the settling ponds following a breach
  • 2003: Commissioning of an emissions treatment system to reduce ammonia odors in the vicinity of the site
  • 1999: Implementation of water diversion from the Oeillal and drainage of the settling ponds
  • 1994: Awarded the first Business Environment Prize by the Direction régionale de l’industrie de la recherché et de l’environnement du Languedoc-Roussillon following installation of a refrigerated storage unit for hydrofluoric acid
  • 1992: PECHINEY sells COMURHEX to COGEMA, during a restructuring of the nuclear power sector
  • 1971: Foundation of the COMURHEX company (short for Conversion Métal Uranium HEXafluorure) , resulting from a merger of the SUCP (Société des Usines Chimiques de Pierrelatte, or Pierrelatte Chemical Plant Company) and the Malvési SRU (Société de Raffinage de l’Uranium or Uranium Refining Company)
  • 1959: Construction of the Malvési SRU
