AREVA’s AVARIS –the Valve Repair in Situ- is one example. This new process has been developed for refurbishing valve seats. For power plant operators, AVARIS is great news: the new technology saves both cost and time as it is no longer necessary to replace the valve bodies and go through all the ensuing consequences such as a re-evaluation of the piping system and other certification processes mandatory for new materials. AVARIS has already been successfully put to the test in Isar 2 nuclear power plant (Germany) where two gate valves of different nominal width were refurbished. The manufacturer of these valves has long since disappeared from the market, so replacement would have been difficult.

"Eric P. Loewen, PhD, Vice President / President Elect, American Nuclear Society: Quotation collected after E. Loewen's speech at Top Fuel 2010 Conference, held in Orlando last September. In 2006, the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) set an ambitious goal to achieve zero fuel failures by 2010. In response, U.S. nuclear owners and operators backed a Fuel Integrity Initiative that emphasized the development of fuel reliability guidelines. Four years after, the industry is clearly on the right trend to Zero. We are getting closer now to the time when the question of fixing Zero will make sense. During last LWR Fuel Performance Meeting in Orlando (FL), Eric P. Loewen alarmed the audience on the negative aspects of a too literal understanding of “Zero by ten”."
