that nuclear waste is reduced to one fifth of its volume and one tenth of its toxicity by separating and recycling plutonium into MOX fuel?
The uranium and plutonium recovered through spent fuel reprocessing are recycled and used to produce MOX, mixed uranium/plutonium oxide fuel.

Some 35 European reactors are now generating electricity with MOX fuel produced by the Recycling business unit. Twenty Japanese reactors are to be loaded with MOX by 2010.

MOX fuel is fabricated by the group's two plants in France, and one in Belgium. Thanks to these, AREVA is market leader in recycling technologies and the top world producer of MOX fuel. The two French plants have ISO 14001 certification.

In the international non-proliferation treaties context, which requires the elimination of excess military plutonium, AREVA is working on American and Russian projects to build MOX fuel plants for the conversion of military plutonium.

Within the AREVA group, Recycling operations are handled by AREVA NC.
