In France, the manufacturing sector has done the best job of controlling energy use, while domestic demand grew and transportation exploded. But there's still room for improvement; processes that should be optimized. Companies that adopt "smart" monitoring when they switch to electricity often save on their total energy bill. We are also far from exhausting all the possibilities offered by the new information and communication technologies: today videoconferencing, tomorrow telecommuting?
Much will depend on energy prices, especially the ultimately inevitable incorporation of environmental impacts into price structures. Companies respond very quickly to price signals!
In addition, manufacturers must assume responsibility for investing in research to develop more and more efficient production technologies.
