Energy issues & markets
By 2030, global energy requirements will have increased by 60% and demand for electricity will have doubled.
In the coming decades, the main energy challenges will be to cope with the beginning of the final depletion of fossil fuels, to meet growing energy demand, and to reduce all CO2 emissions, including those related to power generation.
The table below shows the world energy outlook presented in the 2006 report by the European Commission, “World Energy, Technology and Climate Policy Outlook” (WETO report).
| 1990 | 2010 | 2030 | 2050 | |
| World population (in billions of people) | 5.2 | 6.8 | 8.1 | 8.9 |
| Energy use (MToe*/person) | 1.6 | 1.8 | 2.0 | 2.3 |
| Electricity demand (kWh/person) | 1,832 | 2,597 | 3,543 | 5,214 |
| CO2 emissions (metric tons/person) | 3.8 | 4.3 | 4.8 | 5.0 |
| Note: *MToe: metric tons of oil equivalent; kWh: kilowatt-hour | ||||
