With the help of AREVA, the Guimet Museum acquires a masterpiece of Chinese culture: the Cosmic Buddha Vairocana - September 1, 2003

As part of its patronage policy, AREVA signed an agreement with the Guimet Museum of Asian Arts. Following its contribution in 2001 to the purchase of a painting representing the monk, Ikiu, this year AREVA has helped the museum add the Cosmic Buddha Vairocana to its collections. The masterpiece has taken its place alongside the museum's other Chinese Buddhist collections.

This standing Buddha masterpiece from the Shandong region in Northern China is about 43 inches high, made from pale sandstone and contains traces of polychrome. It was sculpted during the second half of the sixth century under the Northern Qi dynasty (550 - 557). Although extremely short, this era is crucial to the history and spread of Buddhist doctrine in China and is marked notably by sacred literature and religious artifacts.

A combination of circumstances led to its discovery during archaeological digs at the Puzhao temple at Jining in the Shandong province.

The Cosmic Buddha Vairocana means "solar, big sun." It is one of the rare finds on Chinese territory. The standing position with one arm resting by his side and the other bent with hand outstretched symbolizes predication (the gesture means "do not fear" or "your wishes are granted").
