Product lines

The new Renewable Energies business unit was created at the end of 2006 to broaden the group's offering in technologies for CO2-free energy production and in particular to offer decentralized energy supply. The business unit operates in three fields: wind power, bioenergies and hydrogen energy.

Wind power

The product line designs and manufactures high power offshore turbines that convert the wind's motive power into electricity.

Bioenergies

The product line supplies EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) bioenergy power plants that convert organic materials of vegetable and animal origin into energy.

Hydrogen energy

The product line offers solutions for producing hydrogen by water electrolysis and for generating electricity with fuel cells. The fuel cell combines hydrogen and oxygen via a membrane, simultaneously creating water, heat and electricity. The reverse process is used in electrolysis.

Customers

The business unit's current and prospective customers are developers and investors in wind farms, biomass plants and other clean energy power plants. As an example, the BU concluded a contract in February 2008 with PROKON Nord, a wind farm developer, to supply eighty 5-MW turbines for the Borkum West II offshore wind farm.

Increasingly, major electric utilities - AREVA's traditional customers - are taking up positions in the renewable energies market.

Large groups, government organizations and local authorities are potential hydrogen energy customers.

Locations

Wind power
In the wind power sector, the business unit is active in Germany through the production site Multibrid (Bremerhaven).

Bioenergies
The Bioenergies product line has operating units in Europe (France, Germany), Latin America (Brazil) and Asia (India, China). Each one has a skills center and local resources for building bioenergy power plants.

Hydrogen energy
In the field of hydrogen energy, the business unit via its subsidiary HELION is based at France's leading technocity devoted to the environment, the Arbois Mediterranean Europole in Aix-en-Provence.
