Recycling 2,500 metric tons of slightly radioactive lead

The first radiological shielding made from recycled lead - COGEMA* Marcoule

Robert Thémines, Responsible for waste activities - COGEMA*

"Until now, lead decontaminated by melting was put into interim storage at Marcoule, pending a final storage solution. Now, we've identified several ways of re-using it on an industrial scale, still within the nuclear business.

Almost 200 metric tons of biological shielding will soon be required for the interim storage of waste generated by clean-up operations, and 100 metric tons of shaped parts will be used to create a system for transferring radioactive effluents between two of our facilities. Only the melt residues, where most of the radioactivity is concentrated, are sent to ANDRA".
