AFA 3GL fuel assembly

 Wall paper :
800*600 or 1024*768

More than a kilometer of tubes!

The reactor core is made up of fuel assemblies. Each fuel assembly consists of a square bundle of 264 "rods" or leaktight tubes measuring about 4 meters long, sealed at both ends and containing uranium oxide pellets.

A 1300 MWe reactor contains 193 assemblies, i.e. 104 tons uranium divided up between 16 million pellets in 51,000 rods!

The zirconium-alloy rod cladding is the first of the three levels of containment which protect from radiation leaks.
