Shipping a container with yellow cake - Muyunkum site (Kazakhstan)

Shipping out yellow cake at the Muyunkum mining site.

The newly formed French-Kazakh company, KATCO, has successfully mined its first uranium concentrates using a leaching  process at Kazakhstan's Muyunkum deposit.

The process consists of dissolving the uranium, from the ore rock in situ, by injecting an alkaline solution and pumping the mixture to the surface.

The yellow cake is trucked to a rail spur in Tashkent, 50 km from the production site, and then transported 1,000 km away by rail to Ulba, where it is then purified.
