MOX fuel fabrication plant MELOX, France

Recycling plutonium by making MOX fuel…

After spent fuel reprocessing, energy-rich materials are recycled into fuel made with a mixture of uranium and plutonium oxides, or MOX.

One gram of MOX-recycled plutonium generates as much electricity as one ton of oil.

In January 2002, the U.S. government announced its decision to recycle its surplus defense plutonium into MOX fuel using COGEMA's* technology.
