As consumption continues to rise in the face of limited oil and gas resources, the challenge of the 21st century is to supply a sufficient amount of energy to as many people as possible while minimizing the environmental impacts.

On one side, the biggest "energy-eaters" are the developed countries: one fourth of the world's population consumes nearly two thirds of its resources. On the other side, 1.6 billion people have no access to electricity.

An energy system that tolerates such inequities is neither sustainable nor acceptable, since there is no development without energy.

How can energy be supplied in sufficient quantities to as many people as possible to ensure the development of every country? What we have to do to produce more energy while protecting the environment? Is there an ideal source of energy for the future?
