Transmission and Distribution: AREVA and Shanghai Electric inaugurate a new "Green" Ultra High Voltage transformer plant in Wuhan - May 19, 2009

AREVA’s Transmission and Distribution Division (T&D) and Shanghai Electric (SEC), leading equipment manufacturer in China, have inaugurated yesterday, a new “green” Ultra High Voltage transformer factory in Wuhan. Designed and built in accordance with the principles of energy saving and CO2 emission reduction, this state of the art 120,000 sqm transformer plant will set a new benchmark for green factories in China.

Some examples of environmental initiatives include top priority given to materials with minimum impact on the environment, exterior lighting powered by solar energy, waste water condensed from steam used in air-conditioning and heating, and rain water collection built for landscape irrigation.

The new factory will design, manufacture and test high and Ultra High Voltage (UHV) power transformers, supporting the building of China’s UHV power grid.

The SEC AREVA Wuhan Transformer Plant is a winner of the 2009 AREVA Sustainable Development Award, which recognizes worldwide company projects for their significant contribution to sustainable development.

"The Shanghai Electric AREVA Wuhan Transformers Plant represents the extension of the cooperation between Shanghai Electric and AREVA. This follows the creation of the AREVA Shanghai Transformers Plant. Core to the strategic cooperation between the two companies in power transformers, the Wuhan factory aligns with China’s strategy to accompany the development of Central China and boosts the growth of the equipment manufacturing industry. The new plant is committed to support the Chinese power grid and infrastructure with the highest quality of products and services," commented Shanghai Electric’s top management.

Philippe Guillemot, Chairman and CEO of AREVA’s T&D division, said, "The SEC AREVA Wuhan Transformer Plant represents our largest investment in China in recent years and demonstrates our contribution to sustainable development. It confirms the strength of our successful and enduring partnership with Shanghai Electric and our long-standing commitment in the country. In addition to local manufacturing at facilities like Wuhan, AREVA T&D’s Technology Center created last year in Shanghai will provide local research and development in Ultra High Voltage, to further support China’s UHV power grid building ambition."
